Range 1-7/8" to 2-3/4" (47.6 mm to 69.8 mm)
Oversize Stone Sets available to increase range to 3-5/8" (92 mm)
1. Place stones and buffing guides in alternate slots in the
hone body.
2. Place the No. 901880 Drive Shank in the chuck of a 1/2"
electric drill. If a blind cylinder is to be honed or if there
is any obstruction limiting the depth of the honing
stroke, set the drive shank stop to the depth that will
prevent the hone from striking that obstruction or the
end of the cylinder, otherwise the stones will break.
Rotate crankshaft before honing each cylinder to give
the greatest amount of clearance.
3. Before honing, cover crankshaft bearings or other
exposed machined surfaces with oily rags for
protection.
4. Check the cylinders with a micrometer or gauge to
determine which has worn to the largest diameter. The
largest cylinder should be honed first so that the others
may later be honed to an equal diameter.
5. Place the hone in the cylinder and expand the stones
with the knurled adjusting knob until the hone will
support its own weight. About one extra turn of the
adjusting knob will give the proper honing pressure.
6. Place the drive shank collar on the hone and begin
honing. Always start to hone at the end of the cylinder
nearest the crankshaft as this portion has less wear and
will provide an accurate guide. Hone with even strokes
(approximately 40 strokes per minute).
6. Place the drive shank collar on the hone and begin
honing. Always start to hone at the end of the cylinder
nearest the crankshaft as this portion has less wear and
will provide an accurate guide. Hone with even strokes
(approximately 40 strokes per minute).
7. Check the cylinder frequently with a gauge. Hone until
the bore is round and straight. As stock is removed, it
may be necessary to increase honing pressure by
turning the adjusting knob.
8. IF THE BUFFING GUIDES DO NOT WEAR AS FAST AS
THE STONES, DRESS THEM DOWN SLIGHTLY WITH A
COARSE FILE. THE DISTANCE ACROSS THE BUFFING
GUIDES SHOULD BE ABOUT 1/32" LESS THAN THE
DISTANCE ACROSS THE STONES.
9. Clean the stones and buffing guides often with a wire
brush to ensure maximum cutting efficiency. Apply
AMMCO No. 903880 Honing Oil liberally at the first sign
of stone loading.
10. Use finishing stones to remove the last .002" to .003"
(.050 mm to .076 mm) of stock. Keep the finishing stones
clean and free of loading dirt, otherwise they might
scratch the cylinder wall.
11. Hone the other cylinders to the same diameter as the
first one honed.
12. Use Nos. 903955 or 903956 Stone Sets for aluminum. Use
No. 903880 Honing Oil liberally to prevent loading. Hone
with moderate to light honing pressure and fast up-and-
down strokes.
13. Clean the cylinder thoroughly using warm water and
soap. If not available, use clean rags soaked in No. 10
oil. Do not use kerosene or gasoline as solvents of this
type will not remove all the honing waste.
